Departmentally-Sponsored Student Groups

Some student groups on campus are not Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs) under the Center for Student Involvement (CSI), but are instead directly sponsored, overseen, and funded by an academic department, administrative office, or division.

  • Examples may include campus media outlets, varsity club sports under Athletics, or department-run ambassador/advisory boards.
  • Operating Status: These groups do not go through the standard CSI/SGA recognition process because they fall directly under university liability, staffing, and departmental budget lines.
  • Privileges: They typically retain access to campus facilities and marketing through their sponsoring department, but are not eligible for organization-specific benefits like access to SGA funding and leadership awards.

Non-Recognized Groups and Organizations

Any group of students operating, meeting, or organizing on campus that has not completed the official CSI registration process, and is not departmentally sponsored, is considered a Non-Recognized Student Group.

Groups without official recognition do not receive any RSO privileges (including access to reservations, SGA funding, or the use of the UD name/logo).

Risk & Liability Note: Unrecognized groups operate outside official university oversight. Hosting events, collecting money, or representing the group under the University of Dayton name without official status can lead to disciplinary action under the Student Code of Conduct.
