Strong organizations are intentionally inclusive in how they recruit and welcome new members.

Recruitment Best Practices

  • Advertise in multiple channels and locations to reach students who don't see your usual posts
  • Make meeting times, locations, and expectations clear up front
  • State explicitly that all interested students are welcome
  • Have current members who reflect a range of backgrounds at recruitment events when possible
  • Avoid implicit barriers (high dues without scholarships, exclusively evening meetings, only in-person communication)

Membership Selection

Membership selection cannot discriminate based on protected characteristics under UD policy. Values-based single-gender Greek-letter organizations may have legally permitted membership criteria under federal law — check with CSI if your selection process involves any restriction.

Accessibility

See the Event Accessibility Checklist under Planning Events for guidance on making events accessible to members and prospective members with disabilities.

Dues and Financial Barriers

If your org charges dues, consider:

  • Publishing dues amounts up front so prospective members can plan
  • Offering a payment plan or scholarship for members with financial need
  • The Student Engagement Grant (administered by SGA via Financial Aid) provides up to $250/year for students with demonstrated financial need
