Political Activities
In accordance with Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, the University of Dayton, as a tax-exempt institution, is strictly prohibited from directly or indirectly participating or intervening in any political campaign activities on behalf of, or in opposition to, any candidate for elective public office.
To ensure compliance with these regulations, the University’s Political Activities Policy establishes guidelines for the political engagement of faculty, staff, and students. Most importantly, any political activities conducted by individuals must be completely separate and distinct from the University. Activities cannot be made on behalf of the University, either overtly or implicitly.
Campaigning and Advertising Guidelines
Door-to-door campaigning: Campaigning is permissible within the student neighborhood, in compliance with general University policy. However, door-to-door campaigning inside residence halls or other University buildings is strictly prohibited.
Political Advertising (Signs and Bedsheets): Students may place campaign advertisements (e.g., signs) in the windows of their University housing (residence halls, campus housing, or apartments) and inside their rooms, in compliance with University and residence hall policies. Bedsheets used as campaign advertisements on student housing are permitted, provided they follow general University practice and regulations.
Public Spaces: Faculty, staff, and students may not place political advertising on other University property or in public areas of University housing (e.g., University lawns).
