Many student organizations, particularly values-based fraternities and sororities and some professional fraternities are affiliated with a national or international headquarters that provides insurance for its local chapters.
If your organization carries national insurance, you must provide proof of this coverage to the Center for Student Involvement (CSI). Only organizations with Liquor Liability insurance will be eligible to host events with alcohol.
Document Requirements
- Certificate of Insurance (COI): You must submit a current, official Certificate of Insurance from your national provider or broker.

General Liability: Required for all nationally affiliated organizations.
- $2,000,000 General Aggregate
- $2,000,000 Products/Completed Operations Aggregate
- $1,000,000 Each Occurrence
- $1,000,000 Personal & Advertising Injury
- $ 100,000 Fire Damage Liability
- $ 5,000 Medical Payments per Person

Liquor Liability: Specifically required for any organization (such as social or professional fraternities) that hosts, sponsors, or participates in events involving alcohol. The COI must explicitly show that liquor liability coverage is included in your policy.

Insurance Companies
- All Required insurance policies shall be written through insurance companies licensed to do business in the State of Ohio and have a minimum rating of “A” (A. M. Best or equivalent). Insurers with lower than an “A” rating or unlicensed in the state of Ohio shall be subject to the approval of UD’s Risk Manager.

Named Insured
- The named insured shall include the local fraternity/sorority chapter, and when affiliated with a national fraternity/sorority, also the fraternity/sorority’s national affiliation. This requirement shall be satisfied by one joint policy naming both or one each for the local chapter and national organization.

Additional Insured
- "The Additional Insured shall include The University of Dayton, its affiliates and subsidiaries, appointed officials, all employees, and volunteers, all boards, commissions and/or authorities and board members, including employees and volunteers thereof. Coverage provided shall be primary to the Additional Insured’s and not contributing with any other insurance or similar protection available to the Additional Insured’s whether other available coverage be primary, contributing or excess."

- The dates on the policy must be current and active.

A Certificate of Insurance evidencing the insurance requirements and additional insured status is required. All such certificates/notices and policy copies are to be sent to:

Organizational Property and the property of their members and guests are NOT insured by or through the University of Dayton. Responsibility for loss and insurance coverage for personal property is the sole responsibility of the organization or event sponsor.
