Why are you running for SGA?
I want to continue advocating for students and making sure that they are informed about the decision making procedures that affect their academic lives. I want to continue the work that our team has started this school year.

Platform
My goal is to try and better incorporate the academic representatives into the campus community. Having been an Academic Representative, I got a lot of questions about what I do, how we work with SGA, and things like that. I want to make sure that all students have some knowledge of their academic representatives, their academic rights, and the decision making process that affects their academic life.

What experiences do you have that will help you be successful in this role?

I have been an Academic Representative, and am currently the Director of Academic Affairs. I have a deep knowledge of both SGA and Academic Senate procedures and issues. I have also done student outreach/recruitment in my roles as Chair of the UD Model UN High School Conference and as the Program Coordinator and Student Liaison in the Office of Experiential Learning. I also have experience interacting with University Administration, from my SGA roles and as a member of the University Library Committee.

As Director of Academic Affairs I want to make sure that every student here at UD has more control of their academics by giving them a direct line to the academic representatives. I hope to promote inclusivity, opportunity, and engagement within our academics. I am committed to not only overseeing the academic representatives but championing all academics to ensure that they have the resources, support and platform needed to make a real difference.

Why are you running for SGA?

When coming into UD, I was nervous about being accepted for who I was regarding my faith. Then I had the pleasure of attending the Callings Program during July this past year. Wow. Immediately I was touched by the warmth, open-heartedness, and enthusiasm of every person within the program. This welcoming atmosphere encouraged me to further explore opportunities when I officially began attending in August. I’ve gone on to achieve the honor of winning Camper of the Year during Camp Blue, participate in multiple retreats, become an active member of the Catholic LIFE Club, Running Club, and Red Cross Club, secure a position as an employee at the RecPlex, and currently pledge for Phi Kappa Psi. I've experienced personally how important these qualities are with encapsulating an inclusive and welcoming environment. As Director of Marianist Involvement, one of my primary goals is to recreate and enhance the same atmosphere on campus that I found so welcoming and inspiring during my time with the Callings Program.

Platform

Hey everyone, my name is Max Roach, and I’m excited to run as your Director of Marianist Involvement! I'm a First Year Discover Arts Major, and from the moment I set foot on campus, I've been drawn to the diverse and meaningful charisms that define our Marianist community. If elected as your Director of Marianist Involvement, I'm excited to focus on three key ideas that reflect the heart of the Marianist tradition. My main goal is to strengthen community engagement all across campus. Let's create an environment where everyone feels like they truly belong, where each person is valued and welcomed into our Marianist family. Next, we’ll enhance our spiritual journey together. I'm eager to offer more retreats, workshops, and courses that explore Marianist spirituality and leadership. These opportunities will help us deepen our understanding of Marianist values and how we can live them out every day. And last but not least, let's make sure our alumni stay connected and involved. We'll organize fun networking events, set up mentorship programs, and create chances for alumni to give back through community service. Together, we'll keep the Marianist spirit alive long after graduation. And hey, my door is always open! Feel free to drop by with any ideas, concerns, or just to say hi. I'm here to listen and to be a friendly face on campus.

What experiences do you have that will help you be successful in this role?

Having navigated through Catholic grade school, Jesuit high school, and now our Marianist university, I have gained valuable insights into different cultures and religions. Throughout my educational journey, I have remained actively engaged with Campus Ministry, leading and participating in numerous religious retreats that have deepened my understanding not only of my own faith but also of the beliefs of others. As I prepare to lead another religious program, the Callings Program, this summer, I am committed to facilitating a smooth transition for incoming first-year students. During these retreats, I serve as a constant source of information and exemplify discernment as a student attending UD. I firmly believe that effective leadership involves serving others selflessly. If elected, I'll always maintain an open-door policy, listening attentively to the diverse ideas and perspectives of the UD community. The Marianist tradition underscores the importance of creating inclusive communities where every individual is welcomed, valued, and respected irrespective of their cultural or religious background. Having immersed myself in diverse educational and religious environments that prioritize the holistic development of students, I am passionate about fostering an inclusive and supportive community at UD.

Why are you running for SGA?

I am running for SGA because I feel that my values align with the Marianist Values of our university. I have been a member of many faith based organizations in the past; my highschool campus ministry team, campus ministry programs and retreats here at UD, wedding coordinating for holy angels, working in our campus ministry offices, being a part of an interfaith team in highschool, and getting involved in Islam programming in my non-profit, I have been moved by the kindness, welcoming spirit, and passion of each of these organizations and have experienced first hand how these can positively impact someone’s life. I have learned empathy, inclusion, and love since getting involved in spiritual programming and those are emotions that have a place in SGA. Additionally, I have always been drawn to leadership positions in organizations that I care about. For example, I am the Vice President of Inclusion for Pi Beta Phi because I love our members and value their thoughts and feelings. It involves advocating for our members and more specifically, those who may feel that their feelings aren’t being considered and spoken from. I similarly care deeply about Dayton and I feel that what makes our school such a community is the Marianist Values that our school is founded upon. With my connections to Dayton’s campus ministry team and catholic community I would be an asset to SGA. I am proud of our university and want to continue its path of building upon our Marianist values by being a voice for all of our spiritual, religious, and faith organizations.

Hello, My name is Margaret Sommers and I am running to be your director of Marianist Involvement. I am a second year Adolescent to Young Adult Life Science Education major who has previously been the co-president of a non-profit, worked at campus ministry’s center for social concern, and is passionate about her faith. My history of leadership as well as my commitment to faith based organizations in the past have led me to understand why both our faith, spiritual, and religious organizations need a strong voice to represent them, and gives me a unique perspective on what their needs are. During my freshman year I had a lot of difficulty getting involved in Campus Ministry. I felt frustrated and confused as I knew that it was a resource here but felt inaccessible. My goal with this platform is to make it easier for students to learn about the incredible programming that Dayton has to offer and to feel welcome so matter their faith or affiliation.

What experiences do you have that will help you be successful in this role?

In highschool I was the co-president of a nonprofit organization that aided refugees in St. Louis. Not only was this excellent leadership experience as I organized programming, worked with many partners, and represented a larger team, but also many of those we aided were in different faith groups from my own so I have lots of exposure and knowledge about other religions besides just Catholicism. This taught me a lot about what faith can mean to people– the values instilled by a faith group often dictate how someone lives their day to day life and provide a source of comfort. I was formerly the Center for Social Concern with Campus Ministry’s Program Assistant so I am very familiar with the inner workings of Campus Ministry and our Marianist mission. I worked with many members of the campus ministry team to help their visions for programs such as UPSAP and breakouts come to life. Being a part of this team and seeing how impactful their programming is plays a big role in why I was moved to pursue this position. I also have a podcast where I interview catholics and other religious people on what their faith looks like or faith-based research that they have done. This has helped to to understand that there are nuances to have each person practices their faith which will aid me in being Director of Marianist Involvment. Other leadership roles that will benefit me are being the Vice President of Inclusion in Pi Beta Phi, providing me with experience working with a team, communicating effectively, and serving as a representative for others. This role requires having an immense amount of knowledge on other faiths, cultures, and current events and communicating them to my team and applying them to programming, something that will serve my role as Director of Marianist Involvement as well. I am also a wedding coordinator for Holy Angels and St. Anthony’s which has helped me to work in stressful situations and improved my ability to collaborate calmly and effectively and taught me to set specific goals. We also have more faith groups than just Catholics at the University of Dayton! In highschool I was a part of an interfaith partnership of greater St. Louis and have visited a plethora of different holy places; mosques, synagogues, churchs, hindu temples, etc. I have always fostered a passion for interfaith connections. My experience working with other faith groups, attention to detail when it comes to the nuances of faith, communication and leadership skills, and genuine excitement for what this role entails are all skills that will propel me to be a successful Director of Marianist Involvement!
