Welcome Back Students!

We are so excited to see you on campus again and look forward to a great year ahead.

For the First-Year and Transfer students joining us for the first time - Welcome! For your information, this email will be sent to all students every week (typically Monday mornings) and will cover important announcements, updates, and details for PATH-eligible events happening that week.

Not sure what PATH is? You will soon learn more in your August Community Building Meeting (CBM) being facilitated between August 25-Septmber 1 but for now, save this email and read through it in the next few days to help you get up-to-speed!

Updates for 2021-2022

In-Person Events Return!
With the start of the new academic year we are pleased to share that we will once again be able to offer PATH-eligible events in person! As with all things however; we will remain compliant with the guidance of the University's Path Forward Team as it pertains to current Health and Safety guidelines and may, at any time, need to modify our strategies for offering events. That said, students attending PATH-eligible events will be held to the expectations set forth in the COVID-19 Student Agreement and if found to be non-compliant may be asked to leave the event and/or disqualified from PATH earning for that event.

In addition to the return of In-Person events, we are also happy to report that we will be continuing to work with Campus Partners to offer opportunities to engage via Live Distance Opportunities (i.e. events via Zoom). Our hope is that by continuing to offer these types of events students will be afforded more opportunities that meet their needs as well as a variety of pedagoical approaches for learning.

RSVP Requirement for Events
With the need to adapt during the 2020-2021 acaemic year our team was able to learn a thing (or two) that have helped us work towards new strategies that address student feedback and concerns pertaining to long lines waiting to access PATH events.

As such, beginning this fall, All Live In-Person Events will require students to RSVP with the exception of the following:

  • Events in Kennedy Union Ballroom
  • Events in O’Leary Auditorium
  • Events in Sears Auditorium
  • Events in Chudd Auditorium (Science Center 255)
  • Events in Science Center 114
  • Events with Outdoor venues/locations
  • Events happening off-campus (unless requested by the Facilitator)
  • Events facilitated as part of the Residential Curriculum (e.g. CBMs, CLAs, ACE Chats, Coordinator Chats, etc.)

*Other event types and/or locations may be approved to not require RSVP on a case-by-case basis but must be able to accommodate a large audience.

Some important things for students to know as it pertains to RSVPing:

  1. RSVP will open 48 hours prior to the start time of events that require it.
  2. Students should only RSVP if they sincerely plan to attend the event. If a student RSVPs and their intent to attend changes, they should cancel their RSVP as soon as possible to allow others who may be on the waitlist to be notified of a seat's availability.
  3. The location of events requiring RSVP will only be shown on 1850 to individuals with confirmed RSVPs.
  4. Once an event has met its RSVP capacity, students who are interested in the event may join the Waitlist.
  5. Students should only sign up for the Waitlist if they are committed to attending as, in the event that a seat becomes available, individuals will be notified in the order of Waitlist signup that their registration is changed from Wait-List to RSVP and will therefore be expected to show for the event. *Students are expected to check their email for these changes/notifications prior to the event as they may occur at any time leading up to the event.
  6. Students who have a confirmed RSVP for an event do not need to arrive early to the event as they should be guaranteed access.
  7. Students who do not receive an RSVP confirmation may attempt to go to the event in the chance that others fail to show and seats are available however; only those who have confirmed RSVPs are guaranteed a seat and those who are on the waitlist/not RSVPd should speak with the facilitator(s) prior to the event to determine if there is space for them to participate.

How will I know what Engagement Opportunities are available and eligible for PATH Credit?

In order to ensure that all students have full access to available opportunities, the Department of Housing and Residence Life will be communicating this information out in multiple ways:

  • Throughout the year, 1850 will be used to promote AVIATE and all Engagement Opportunities that are available to students and eligible for PATH. Students will be auto-added to (or may join) the AVIATE group where they can visit daily and sign up for text or email notifications which can alert them to new and upcoming opportunities. To view available opportunities, visit go.udayton.edu/aviateevents
  • As part of the Community Building Meetings (CBMs), student staff may share upcoming opportunities and how residents can get involved.
  • Print materials may also be used to supplement the advertising and publicity of available and upcoming Engagement Opportunities that are eligible for PATH credits.
  • Each week, AVIATE will send out a “This Week in AVIATE” post/email with details about upcoming PATH-eligible opportunities. This email and post may also include updates, tips and FAQs pertaining to AVIATE, to help support students in their experience.

Any event that is listed on the AVIATE calendar are PATH eligible (unless otherwise noted). Since it is possible for non-PATH approved events to claim they are PATH eligible, it is imperative that students confirm PATH-eligibility by checking the AVIATE calendar; unless an event is (also) posted on the AVIATE group, you can assume it is not eligible.

What does it mean?

ACE: AVIATE Co-curricular Educator; ACEs are student employees and peer educators tasked with serving as a direct liaison between students and Housing and Residence Life on matters related to AVIATE. ACEs’ primary responsibilities include strategically educating students and campus partners about the AVIATE program, supporting PATH-eligible events, and meeting with peers to provide resources and answer questions about engaging in the program.

Baseline: Points established to help offset the challenge of earning PATH credit during semesters of which a student is living or working away from campus and unable to access PATH-eligible opportunities in the same way as their peers. Students must meet certain criteria in order to receive up to a set number of points and submit the appropriate Baseline Request form

Flight Plan: The Flight Plan is the blueprint that provides you and your fellow residential students with the tools and support you’ll need to enhance your residential experience at the University of Dayton. Because “AVIATE” is defined as “to fly,” the program supports the mindset that you, as a UD student, must individually take control of your educational journey, setting goals to help you succeed and taking the steps to use resources available to reach that final destination.

PATH: Points Accumulated Toward Housing—is the alignment of the residential curriculum, campus partner engagement opportunities and the housing assignments process. As a result of participation in certain Engagement Opportunities aligned with AVIATE, you can earn points (identified through a "Badge" system in 1850) that reward residential learning and help you achieve a higher priority within the housing assignments process. The more engaged you are in the residential community, the more points you are likely to accumulate. The more points (or badges) you and your group members have upon entering the housing assignments process, the greater likelihood you will receive your preferred housing type.
Self-Guided Opportunity:
