Gender Equity Research at UD Colloquium - April 14

All faculty and staff are invited to attend the second annual Gender Equity Research at UD Colloquium Wednesday, April 14 at noon via Zoom.  The colloquium features research conducted over the 2021-22 academic year by Gender Equity Research Fellows; a second session will feature a presentation about “Caretaking During the Pandemic”.  This event is sponsored by the Women's Center, Women's & Gender Studies Program, and the Provost's Office. Registration is available here.

During Women's History Month, the Women's Center coordinates an annual exhibit highlighting contributions women have made at the University of Dayton. The 2021 theme, Leading with Character and Resilience, recognizes women at UD, who in an extraordinarily trying year marked by a pandemic, social and political unrest, and economic uncertainty, have had a profound impact in a variety of areas and fields, in our community and beyond.

This video highlights the Women of UD honorees. To access the video, click the image above. To hear more from the phenomenal women honored, check out the 2021 Women's History Month page here: 2021 Women of UD Honorees

2021 Miryam Award Recipient - Laura Bistrek

The Miryam Award, begun in 1996 by Campus Ministry’s Center for Social Concern, seeks to acknowledge individuals or groups who go above and beyond their job descriptions to improve and advance the climate for women at UD. This year, one of our co-conveners for the Women's Advisory Council, Laura Bistrek, has been awarded the Miryam Award.

Nominated by an Equity Advocate, Laura's nomination emphasized how she "has shown a clear commitment to gender equity amongst all forms of non-discrimination and equity. Specifically for this nomination, Laura has advocated for and led the creation of the UD Men for Gender Equity program. This program recognizes the critical role men must play in advocating for gender equity.”

Join us in congratulating and celebrating Laura's recognition. To read the full story, follow this link: 2021 Miryam Award

Recognizing and Celebrating Women - Women's Advisory Council

In honor of the end of Women's History Month, the UD Men for Gender Equity Initiative would like to celebrate the Women's Advisory Council (WAC) who are central and integral to the work of the Initiative and so many other efforts across campus. Below are the current 14 members of the Council and their department across campus. The WAC selects and oversees the Men’s Equity Advocates, directs content for Men’s Equity Allies sessions, and informs men of climate issues as it pertains to women.

The work done by this Council is immeasurable and often goes unseen in the University's pursuit of its mission and efforts toward gender equity on campus. To learn more about the Women's Advisory Council, follow this link: Women's Advisory Council

The Equity Advocates and Women's Advisory Council are working hard to create virtual engagement opportunities for the 2020-2021 academic year. Be on the lookout in next month's newsletter for any new opportunities or email UDMenforGenderEquity@udayton.edu for more information!

Diving Deeper:
What You Can Do to Change Culture, Perception, and Oppression

The Adorkable Misogyny of the Big Bang Theory

The Big Bang Theory provides a perfect lens through which to deconstruct a popular media trope the video's author calls "the Adorkable Misogynist." Adorkable Misogynists are male characters whose geeky version of masculinity is framed as comically pathetic yet still endearing. Their status as nerdy “nice guys” then lets them off the hook for a wide range of creepy, entitled, and sexist behaviors.

Watch Pop Culture Detective (2017) analyze the subtle misogyny in the Big Bang Theory and other popular media to practice noticing and calling out when subtle misogyny is at play in our media and our lives.

Sexual Citizens: Sex, Power, and Assault on Campus

Sexual Citizens transforms how we understand and address sexual assault. Through intimate portraits of life and sex among today’s college students, Jennifer S. Hirsch and Shamus Khan spresent an entirely new way to understand sexual assault. Their insights transcending current debates about consent, predators in a “hunting ground,” or the dangers of hooking up.

Sexual Citizens reveals the social ecosystem that makes sexual assault a predictable element of life on a college campus. Find out more about the book and authors at the following website: Sexual Citizens

Aspiring Social Justice Ally Identity Development: A Conceptual Model
Individuals who are supportive of social justice efforts are not always effective in their anti-oppression efforts. Some who genuinely aspire to act as social justice allies are harmful, ultimately, despite their best intentions, perpetuating the system of oppression they seek to change. In this 2007 article by Keith E. Edwards, the author presents a conceptual model to better understand and frame how those in their desires to ally may develop. Read the full article following this link: Aspiring Social Justice Ally Identity Development: A Conceptual Model

The Status of Women at UD
The Status of Women at the University of Dayton Report Card focuses on the representation of women employees across the life of the institution. Using data collected each fall from the university's Institutional Research Office, the annual report card focuses on the composition of the workforce and highlights women's representation in academic and non-academic leadership. An overview of terminology used throughout the Report Card is available here.
