A letter to students from faculty and staff - additional signers

Dear [FIRST_NAME],

A sincere message

We realize this is an extraordinarily challenging time, and that no statement can fully capture the complexities of our current reality, or adequately address the depths of pain, suffering, and sadness felt by members of the UD community. Recent demonstrations and protests responding to the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor at the hands of the police spotlight a centuries old crisis of (white) police brutality against Black and Brown citizens. The protests have led to the killing of even more Black and Brown folks across the US: David McAtee, Chris Beaty, Dave Patrick Underwood, Italia Kelly, Calvin Horton Jr., James Scurlock, and many, many more. Tragically, these demonstrations are taking place during a global pandemic which -- based on a foundation of systemic racism -- disproportionately impacts the health of African American communities, and economic base for many people of color. 


We also acknowledge the impact of Dr. Daria Graham, Associate Dean of Students and Executive Director of the Multi-Ethnic Education and Engagement Center (MEC), leaving UD after 30 years to (rightfully) advance her career.

 

UD is an imperfect community who struggles with systemic oppression, particularly institutional racism and other forms of intersectional subordination.  However, we remain committed to educating ourselves, learning, and growing so we can be in a better position to proactively resist and restructure UD policies, practices, and norms in line with active anti-racism. We are called from our Marianist mission to advocate for social justice, true diversity and inclusion.  

 

We, the undersigned, remain committed to staying at the table in virtual spaces, and (when possible) in physical spaces to support you and one another, and to work toward structural change. Along with the MEC staff, we are here for you. Please do not hesitate to reach out to any of us.
